In Memory Of Gashouse Dave....

"Hey Homes....listen to this!", were the words I had heard so many times on the phone, often very late at night. But no matter the time, I always took the call because the man behind those words made me smile way too many times.

The first time I met "Gashouse" Dave Shorey was when he came to our home in Van Nuys to turn off the gas. The grizzled persona of David Randall Shorey not only kept the gas on but also revealed a true bluesman possessed of a unique talent. The details of that first meeting are in the show today.

I would like to thank my friend, Tom Sullivan, a very accomplished musician himself and a long term friend of Dave for joining me on this show and sharing some of his fond memories of the Gasman.

I would also like to thank Norm Sancho and Billy DaMota for arranging a great send-off for Gashouse Dave last week.

We are now preparing Dave's "Guitar King - Live In Hollywood" for release. Playing with Dave on that recording are Norm Sancho (bass) and Eddie Avilla (drums). The recording was made at Grandmaster Studios with Jimmi Mayweather at the engineering helm. The recording date was 7/13/96 and we are just sorry that Dave won't be around to enjoy its forthcoming release.

Gashouse Dave will long be fondly remembered throughout Southern California by the many lives he touched....on and off the stage.

Hi John,

I lost touch with Dave Shorey when he changed phone numbers and I stopped booking bands in clubs a few yrs. back. I did not know Dave had passed. I booked him many times and played with him (bass) even more. He did his first gig for me when I booked Fais-Do-Do and got him to play with and back up Louisiana Guitar Red to open for Becky Sharp. After they played Becky seemed tame.

Besides “Holmes” he called me “Bluesboy” and somehow persuaded me to play gigs where I knew I wouldn’t be paid what he said I would be paid...but it was Dave. He’d call at eight for a nine o’clock gig in the valley. However, he was an artist in the real true sense of the word...haunted by a “chattering mind” he dreamed words and music...I will miss him.

I met him while playing with Bob Jones, who played drums w/ Bloomfield and with Dave...Bob played guitar and was lead vocalist in Bob Jones and Hard Drive...1995-2000? Dave sat in many times. Bob was the drummer who along with Dave had to baby sit Bloomers. At any rate, we did a few of his tunes...here are a couple...hope you like ‘em.

Thanks for your audio tribute to Dave...I listened on iTunes and you really got the essence of him...the big bear...so driven and compulsive and a great player with a unique voice and perspective. The world should have known him.

All the best,

Mickey Moriarty
