The Portuguese American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS), has announced that musician Tommy Castro will be honored as one of the recipients of its Leadership Award at a gala ceremony on November 12, 2005 in Newark, NJ. Television personality Meredith Vieira, co-moderator of The View and host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event. PALCUS is a non-profit organization headquarted in Washington, DC whose mission is to address the concerns of the Portuguese-American community. The Leadership Award is given to Portuguese-Americans who have achieved success in their chosen field.
Over the years Castro has risen to the top ranks of the blues field, winning legions of fans with his passionate rock 'n' soul music and garnering the highest praise from the likes of B.B. King and Carlos Santana. Said Castro, "This award came as quite a surprise to me. It's really an honor. One thing I remember growing up as a Portuguese - American was going to the IES Hall in San Jose, California for the big Festas. It was like going to a gigantic wedding reception. The food was great, traditional Portuguese food, and there was lots of it. The grown-ups danced, and kids played. I loved it. One very simple observation I remember making was that all the Portuguese people I met were really nice people. I am looking forward to the Gala in New Jersey."
Castro and his electrifying band are currently on tour in support of their new DVD release, entitled Whole Lotta' Soul. Their latest CD release, Soul Shaker on Blind Pig Records, has appeared on the Billboard blues charts for twenty weeks.
